Italy - Night 1 - Dexter Tang

The Sanremo Music Festival, one of the oldest TV music competitions in the world on a national level, is Italy's most popular song contest. It was my first time watching it live. After almost 30 minutes in, the competition officially started. With 14 acts on the first night alone, here are some of the acts that I loved (or hated) or just worth commenting about.

gIANMARIA - Mostro

He looks like a twinkier version of Blanco. I know right! How can you be more twinky than Blanco but there you go!

Mr. Rain - Supereroi

He gave me Mahmood vibes - both the way he raps and the way he looks. I actually liked the song. It was a nice touch to listen to the kids’ choir accompanying the song. The only issue I have with this song is that it felt like it didn’t have any climax. It was just the same throughout.

Marco Menguni - Due Vite

I am going to be controversial here - he looks and sounds like Blas Canto from 2021 except he’s singing in Italian. That aside, easily my favourite act of the evening. The song is your typical Eurovision worthy ballad. Great vocals and great energy and I may have fallen in love with his cheeky smile.

Coma Cose - L’addio

I really like this duo. Her voice is just distinct and memorable and the composition of the song is just so beautiful. It certainly helps when they have a live orchestra for Sanremo. Love love love.

Leo Gassmann - Terzo cuore

This song is different from the majority of the other entries. Definitely switched the mood after a string of ballads! With that cheeky smile (and that cheeky kiss), this is a contender. He just needs to brush up his vocals a bit more but I certainly like this performance and the song.

Cugini di Campagna - Lettera 22

I just wanted to say they all recycled Blanco’s outfit from 2022’s grand final.

Colla Zio - Non mi va

They were so much fun! I could see myself jamming to this song and they bring so much energy. I can’t see this representing Italy in Liverpool but it's worth watching though!

Mara Sattei - Duemilaminuti

What a beautiful song and her vocals are just on point. I am personally voting for this one if I could vote. Easily, my favourite one for the night!

Mahmood & Blanco - Brividi

No they are not participating again but they did perform their hit song on the first night. Was it as magical as the first time they performed it in 2022? No. Was it worth highlighting? YES! This song is still on my repeat playlist!

At the end of the first night, Marco Menguni unsurprisingly topped the votes although I wished Mara Sattei received more love but at Sanremo, anything can happen and the first night is just the beginning. On the second night, 14 more acts will perform their song, hoping to repeat Maneskin’s glory in Liverpool.

Sweden - Heat 1 - Richard Isaac

Melodifestivalen 2023, hosted by Farah Abadi and Jesper Rönndahl, kicked off in Göteborg’s Scandinavium arena with a bang: a festive, over-the-top number, “Cirkus Mello,” celebrating “Sweden’s carnival.”

1. Tone Sekelius - “Rhythm of My Show”

Tone returned after her breakthrough debut last year (as the first trans contestant) with a catchy, upbeat dance number about loving oneself. In a black, belted, studded, jeweled coat dress and accompanied by dancers against a predominantly red background featuring flames, she confidently delivered the English song, which had a touch of Ricky Martin and some odd lyrics we’ve come to expect: “You should buckle up, you know I cause a stir / I’m the one, the only, you can call me the confidence connoisseur… It’s the rhythm of my show / I’m dancing in solo / My body, my body, feeling like I am a Van Gogh.”

2. Loulou LaMotte - “Inga sorger” (No sorrows)

This member of The Mamas (ESC 2020) returned for an inspirational solo number in Swedish, about mutual support. In a flowing green gown with gold accents, using simple staging (standing at the mic, backlit), she sang pretty well, accompanied by off-stage backup. Lyrics included “You’re safe in my arms / Take my hand, let’s stand together / We’ll fight for each other tonight.” The lights and music built, but overall, it just seemed a bit too earnest.

3. Rejhan - “Haunted”

Sixteen-year-old Rejhan, in a simple white shirt, black pants, and gold chain, started his English ballad slowly, alone, in the dark, backlit. His vocals were gentle, possibly nervous, and he seemed weak on the high notes. A single dancer appeared in the background, but it was not enough to keep me from agreeing with one of the lyrics: “Wake me up when it’s over.”

4. Elov & Beny - “Raggen går”

Nu kör vi (here we go)! These two cute guys in accessorized leather jackets and black caps revved up the audience with this energetic “epa-dunk” (party music) number about finding a rural gal who just wants to have fun (unlike all the jealous and anxious city girls — but think about it: who is the common denominator here, hmm?) and has a tattoo of her ex on her backside (“they’re not so prudish in the country”).

It’s quite the production, with the boys and their six backup dancers (the three gals dressed in retro party fashion) hopping in an actual car on stage and swaying as they “drive” against a cruising backdrop. The action later moves to a hot dog stand in the audience, where they share sausages with condiments. Throughout, there’s lively choreography, including an odd hand motion: an upturned fist shaken to the beat, in such a way as to show off their many rings. All in all, a crowd pleaser in the Arvingarna tradition.

5. Victor Crone - “Diamonds”

Victor (ESC 2019 for Estonia, “Storm”) returns to his native Sweden with an up-tempo English pop song that is very much “in his lane.” He’s dressed as Rejhan’s photonegative (black shirt, white pants) but with the same gold chain, and the same simple, dark, backlit start. Despite unseen backup singers, his vocals seem just OK, particularly weak on the big notes (still). Though the love song’s pace and light show do build, it’s a pretty standard effort (“Stay with me, my heart is open wide / I’m blinded by your light / Like diamonds in the sky…”).

6. Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos - “Länge leve livet” (Long Live Life)

These charming grand dames — friends for 53 years — return to Melfest, having made it to Andra Chansen in 2021 (Eva also participated in 1977). This year, resplendent in gold, sparkly outfits, they performed a fun, upbeat retro number about the long friendship between (as the lyrics say) these “Queens of the Night,” with a lot of 1920s touches: from Ewa’s flapper dress to the old-timey B&W on-screen visual effect to the period choreography by the ladies and their dapper backup dancers bearing trumpets and giant feather fans. Parts featured some silly but fun nonsense lyrics and an odd vocal effect. At times the gals seemed briefly a little out of synch lyrically, but no matter: these veterans delivered another entertaining novelty song.

7. Jon Henrik Fjällgren & Arc North feat. Adam Woods - "Where You Are (Sávežan)"

This entry took eight (8) people to write! That’s usually a bad sign, but the exception proves the rule. Jon Henrik (Melfest 2015 [2nd]; 2017 [3rd]; 2019 [4th]) returned with drummer Arc North and singer Adam Woods with an upbeat electronic number named for his young daughter, about longing for love.

It also started slowly, with Adam singing and Jon Henrik jojking in a long, white Sami coat, which he soon doffed to reveal a sleek black and silver outfit that complemented the puffy silver winter jackets on the other guys, at which point the tempo picked up considerably, putting me in mind of Keiino. All three occupied an elevated stage (resembling Sam Ryder’s geometric contraption), pulsating with bright white lights, to go with the predominantly blue, snow-and-mountain background graphics and light show.

Later, Jon Henrik joined a single female dancer on the stage, and the energetic song was punctuated with nearly subliminal images of landscapes and an eye. I found the lyrics kind of trite (“I wanna live / For a love like this / I’ll find you wherever you are / No matter the distance / Don’t feel any different / I’ll give it all / To be where you are”) and the singing just all right.

After an odd little interval act involving Jesper, nearly naked, climbing into a giant balloon, it was announced that Jon Henrik & company (#7) was advancing to the grand final on March 11 (no point totals were reported).

The phone lines opened yet again, and after both a comedian and Cornelia Jakobs performed (the latter doing, in my opinion, a vastly superior version of “Hold Me Closer” with an on-stage band and much better staging and styling), the votes were reported by age group.

Tone Sekelius (#1) won all but the 75+ age group, thereby advancing to the final. Victor Crone came in next, distantly followed by Elov & Beny (#4), so both acts will go to the semifinal on March 4. The last three were not far behind and virtually tied.

One heat down, three to go!

Spain - Final - Angel Aguilar

Benidorm fest 2023 final Review

On this day February 4th 2023 the grand finale of Benidorm fest has taken place, and Spain has selected their representative for Eurovision.

The night started with a lot of convinced fans that either Agonay or Blanca Paloma will win tonight as they won each of their semifinals respectively, although my favorite is and will be Vicco, haha.

The famous Spanish superstar and still a very mucho mamacita, Monica Naranjo hosted the show along Rodrigo Vazques.

The first contestant of the night was Karmento with her song quiero y duelo which it had a feeling of flamenco but with more gypsy notes, it was forgettable, ending points 80.

The second contestant was Megara with their upbeat hard rock anthem Arcadia, great staging, good feeling rock song, me liky, ending points 106.

Third act was by the lovely Alice Wonderland which with her Piano theme Ballad Yo quisiera, did a good job but as I am writing this, I forgot already how that song went, oops, lol, ending points 89.

Fourth Act was by a cute girl going by the artistic name of fucsanota, ok, her song  was mi Familia, which obviously talked about her family and their car, which it was also in the stage, cute song with hints of flamenco and a goth pop feeling, ending points 71

Fifth act was Agoney, a favorite, with good staging performance in his song quiero arder, a very good beat with a depeche mode feeling and hints of gothic and dance songs, this was pretty cool, ending points 145.

Sixth act was another favorite Blanca Paloma with her song Eaea that goes full flamenco upbeat and great vocals but not my cup of tea, ending points 169.

Seventh act was Jose Otero with his dance song inviernos en marte, which I like a bit, ending points 75.

Eight act was Vicco ( my favorite) with her 80s retro feeling modern dance song nochentera, which I can dance all night long, so cool and catchy. Ending points 129.

Good luck to Spain and Channel, oops, I mean Blanca Paloma in Eurovision 2023!!!

Hasta la vista Baby!

Spain - SF 1

After the success and the impact of the Benidorm Fest in 2022, the 25th of October were announced the participants in the second edition, that took place during the last days in January and the first days in February, 2023.

The 29th of October, in a special TV show with performances of all contendants, we could know more about the eighteen candidatures (four more than in the first edition) that took part in the two semifinals (the 31th of January and the 2nd of February). Only four in each semifinal qualified for the Grand Final (the 4th of February).

As an early present for Christmas, the 18th of December, all the songs were released. The selection process had began on the 1st of September and was closed on the 10th of October.
In total Spanish broadcaster received 876 proposals of all kind of music. That circumstance was reflected when the final list was published.

Eventually, Benidorm was crowded by fans in a week full of events since the 29th of January but, as at the ESC, the real party began on Tuesday with the first semifinal:

Song 1– Sharonne “Aire” (link 1

It’s a dance song that tries to send a message to open up, take a breath and push forward. The drag queen's musical proposal has epic overtones and, in the performance, we could enjoy with the typical drag’s costume changes. Iván Torrent, Alejandro Barroso and Cristóbal Garrido (Sharonne) are the authors of the song.

Song 2 – Aritz Arén “Flamenco” (link 2

Aritz offered a international pop theme with arrangements and influences of Spanish sounds. He started his career as a dancer (he was a contestant in a talent show for dancers a few years ago) and began his performance alone at the stage but ended it with and acrotango full of sensuality with a female dancer. The theme is composed by Carlos Marco, Frida Amundsen, Kaci Brown, Sam Gray and Tonino Speciale.

Song 3 – Sofía Martín “Tuki” (link 3

The Spanish-German singer and songwriter Sofía Martín performed a song with an electronic rhythm that gathers sounds and vibrations of contemporary Spanish pop and urban music. She tried to stand over the others with a well produced staging, a pyramid structure staircase and a sensual coreography with young dancers. Freddy Rochow, Claudio Maselli and Sofía Martín are the authors of the song "Tuki"

Song 4 - Agoney “Quiero Arder” (link 4

Agoney decided to take part in the Benidorm Fest with a risky and explosive song that displays all his vocal waste. This electropop is built on a set of violins that merge into a base of multi-sensory electronics. Agoney heated the venue with five dancers and, according to the title of the theme, at the end of his burning performance, smoke and fire appeared on stage.

Song 5 - Megara “Arcadia” (link 5

Rock sounded loud in Benidorm. In words of the group, the song is 'a fucksia rock', with which they wanted to win the right to represent Spain in Liverpool. It takes us into a virtual story in which two flesh and blood girls would unleash their love through a video game. Megara interpreted the proposal in a futuristic atmosphere full of videogames reminiscences. Sara Jiménez Moral, Roberto La Lueta Ruíz and Israel Dante Ramos are the composers of "Arcadia"

Song 6 – Alice Wonder “Yo quisiera” (link 6

Alice Wonder bet for an indie, alternative and dance pop song and intended to touch our hearts. In the artist's words, the theme is the inner storm that happens inside someone who gives up trying to understand the world, simply lives in it. The performance began in a very intimist way and evolved to message full of strength. Alice Wonder herself is the composer of the proposal.

Song 7 - Meler “No nos moverán” (link 7

Meler took the party and good vibes to the stage with their pop song that encourages dancing, jumping and enjoying good times. We felt that it was time to take a risk and we have dared to try a more electronic production’, they said. The theme is composed by Jonathan Geraint Burt, Francisco Javier Pagalday González, Natalia Neva Martín, Oliver García Cerón and José Héctor Portilla Rodríguez.

Song 8 – Fusa Nocta “Mi familia” (link 8

Fusa Nocta offered a very personal performance with "My family". The theme, in words of the singer, has various musical genres to reflect the many facets of the family, from the most beautiful to the darkest one. Fusa Nocta's mixes trap, flamenco, electronic sounds and rap. She was accompanied by five male dancers in a very sensual dance break. The song is signed by Ignacio Moreno González, Carlos Padilla Linares and Miriam Nares Signes, Fusa Nocta herself.

Song 9 – Twin Melody “Sayonara” (link 9

The most famous twins in Tiktok tried to conquer first Spain and later Europe with "Sayonara". Twin Melody bet for a song of empowerment and self-love, to leave behind and say goodbye to the things that do not fill or represent us and the people who hurt us. The influencers mixed languages such as French, English with Spanish and Basque. The song is composed by Jonathan (de Meler), Natalia Neva and Twin Melody themselves.

Live Performance of We Are One

Belgium - Rachel Guttler

2023 is the turn of the broadcaster VRT to select Belgium’s song for Eurovision. VRT represent the Flemish speaking side of all things Belgium and have sent past artists like Tom Dice, Laura Tesoro, Sennek and Hooverphonic.

VRT surprised many when they announced the return of Eurosong, a national selection process last used seven years ago when Laura Tesoro won through in 2016. The surprises kept coming with VRT changing the Eurosong format to have the 7 artists perform not one, but two potential Eurovision entries. The artists and their potential songs were as follows:

  • Ameerah – “The Carnival” / “Armageddon”

  • Chérine – “Ca m’ennuie pas” / “Mon étoile”

  • gala dragot – “emotion ollie” / “t’inquiète”

  • Gustaph – “Because of You” / “The Nail”

  • Hunter Falls – “Home” / “Ooh La La”

  • Loredana – “I Dream in Colours” / “You Lift Me Up”

  • The Starlings – “Oceanside” / “Rollercoaster”

Snippets of these songs can be found by clicking here!

The final was held 14 January, however during the week before VRT showed 5 episodes that involved the artists giving advice to each other about their two songs and then ultimately ending with each one selecting the song that they would take to the final.

The final was held at Palais 12 in Brussels and was hosted by Peter Van de Veire and included a performance by Duncan Laurence.

For the final, an equal amount of jury and public votes were combined to select the winner. Included in the jury were NikkieTutorials, Laura Tesoro, Jérémie Makiese and Alexander Rybak.

The Eurosong 2023 final results were as follows (jury / public):

  1. Gustaph - “Because of You” 278 points (121 / 157)

  2. The Starlings - “Rollercoaster" 277 points (94 / 183)

  3. Gala Dragot - “T’inquiète” 271 points (146 / 125)

  4. Chérine - “Ca m’ennuie pas” 268 points (145 / 123)

  5. Ameerah - “The Carnival” 171 points (107 / 64)

  6. Loredana – 'You Lift Me Up' 167 points (83 / 84)

  7. Hunter Falls - 'Ooh La La' 128 points (84 / 44)

So it was Gustaph ,with his self-written song “Because of You”, who was the surprise winner, coming 3rd with the jury and 2nd with the public. It’s a fun, camp dance song that will bring some entertainment to the Eurovision stage.

A little about Gustaph: he is a 42 year old Belgian singer-songwriter, producer and vocal coach. He has been a backing vocalist for Sennek (2018) and for Hooverphonic (2021) and will now get his chance to take to the main stage in Liverpool for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

Estonia SF 2 - Aaron Paraiso

Tere päevast! This year the Estonian national selection, Eesti Laul is split into two semi finals and a final. The second semifinal took place on 14 January in two parts at the Viimsi Atrium. The first part consisted of the performances and the second was the results of the voting.

The show started with the hosts introducing themselves and a performance from Eesti Laul veterans Greta Paia and Sven Lõhmus. Before each competing artist, there was an introduction where they spoke about themselves and which previous entries were their favourites.

First up was Inger, who gave a lively performance alone on stage with a chair on top of a large lazy Susan.

Next up was Linalakk and Bonzo. The two of them were standing on stage alone with some lightbulbs around then as props. The song was soothing  with a slow tempo and guitar music as the background.

Meelik performed a 70's type song,  which was shown in black and white for the first half, then in colour. Their style was interesting as they wore longsleeved white shirts with long pants, along with socks and sandals.

Elysa went on next with a modem sounding sound, but with 80's looking dancers and staging. The choreography was funny, but the lighting was a little dark.

The following artist was Robin Juhkental, who performed with a dancer with random moves. The song was slow and relaxing. They certainly took advantage of special effects being allowed as there were some trippy optical tricks used.

M Els took the stage next with a red dress and red lighting. The song was very catchy and had a great reaction from the audience.

The group Wiiralt performed next with their lovely Estonian language country music song. It was shown in black and white.

Following them was Sissi, with her dramatic performance. The lighting made it look like she was underwater. She performed barefoot with loose fitting clothes.

Singer and musician Carlos Ukareda then sang his slow paced song alone on stage with a guitar, wearing black.

Alika was the final contestant to perform. She was alone on stage with a self-playing piano wearing white. After a while she played the piano for a while before it continued to play by itself. Very dramatic and grand performance. She stole the show.

Before the results of the voting were announced, Kerli performed her song with Kristian Järvi on the piano. Her usual eccentric style was very present in this performance.

There were two rounds of voting. The first round included results of both the jury and public vote. Four went straight through to the final from this round - Inger, Meelik, Sissi and Alika.

Before the second round of voting results, which was from public voting only, singer/dancer Yasmyn performed. These results only allowed one more singer to get through to the final, and this was M Els.

The final will be held on 11 February, 2023 at the Tondiraba Ice Hall in Tallinn.

Norway SF 2 - T.J. Tuck

The second semi-final of Norway’s annual Melodi Grand Prix took place on Saturday, 21 January, 2023 from Nydalen.

The night saw seven of the 21 contenders for this year’s Norwegian ticket to Liverpool compete for 3 spots in the Grand Final scheduled for Saturday, 4 February, 2023 at the Trondheim Spektrum.

Energetic performances were given by both Ella A with her rather risqué dancefloor pleaser Waist, and JONE & Silke with the upbeat Norwegian bop Ekko inni meg. These were two of the favourites to advance to the final heading into the evening.

Only one other song in Norwegian was in the night’s roster: Drøm d bort, which was delivered in a heartfelt and competent performance. 2022 favourite, and another favourite of the night to advance to the final, Elsie Bay, made a return this year with a theatrical rendition of her entry Love You in a Dream. Drawing upon the popularity and success of Blåsemafian’s brass-centric entry in 2021, Swing’It’s Prohibition provided us three minutes of catchy 1920s political realness.

Finally, Alejandro Fuentes delivered us an Iberian beat – Fuego – would this follow in the success of a certain other Fuego of Eleni Foureira fame? And Bjørn Olav Edvardsen’s Turn Off My Heart rounded out the evening with a deeply personal and emotional performance.

In keeping with MGP tradition, quantifiable results were not disclosed, with only the three top-voted performances of the night receiving a coveted Finalepass into the final. After Norway had their say though online voting, JONE, Elsie Bay and Swing’It will advance.

The three new finalists will take on Umami Tsunami, Ulrikke, Alessandra, and three more TBD artists, at the Grand Final in February to win the right to represent Norway at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. We cannot wait to see the results!

Norway SF 1 - Evan Stewart

Melodi Grand Prix 2023 kicked off on January 14 when the Norwegian song festival held its first semifinal. Arian Engebø and Stian Thorbjørnsen hosted. Those familiar with recent MGPs will note a change in structure to this year’s contest. Gone are the duels of yesteryear. This year’s contest will consist of three semifinals of seven songs apiece. Three songs from each semi will advance to the final.

The semifinal opened with Alessandra Mele singing “Queen of Kings”, an up-tempo number that could best be described as one of a long line of “Viking bops.” Alessandra has a powerful, deep voice and is flanked by four dancers who appear from the shadows, Anna Bergendahl-style.

The second artist of the night was Eirik Næss. His song, “Wave”, called to mind Ed Sheeran’s folksy pop with lovely harmonies in the chorus and comforting golden lighting.

Certainly the most memorable staging of the night came from Rasmus Thall, who staged his song “Tresko” (Norwegian for “clogs”) quite literally when he floated onto the screen on a giant yellow shoe. Sporting shades and a silk headscarf as he converted his oversized footwear into a sound system, Rasmus sang a funky number reminiscent of Meandi’s “Drip” from Pabandom iš naujo 2020.

In an abrupt change of pace, Rasmus was followed by Kate Gulbrandsen, the Norwegian entrant to Eurovision 1987, and her ballad “Tårer i Paradise” (Tears in Paradise). Though returning MGP winners can be hit or miss, Kate’s song was a restrained and timeless ballad and her voice still shone bright.

Fifth on the night was Umami Tsunami, a newly-formed boy band. Their song “Geronimo” had clear KPOP influences and was performed with a mix of youthful energy and the chaos of inexperience. It was a catchy if unpolished number and, judging by the piercing squeals of young girls in the audience, could be a dark horse to win this edition of MGP.

The penultimate song was perhaps the most anticipated of the night. Ulrikke Brandstorp, the winner of MGP 2020 whose Eurovision berth was thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic, returned with “Honestly”, a soaring ballad whose dramatic yet familiar beats make it seem tailor-made for Eurovision. Staged with a sea of fog, a striking spotlight, and ending with its own confetti shower, it announced itself as the frontrunner to win MGP 2023.

Finally, the last entry of the night was “Freaky for the Weekend”, by Byron Williams Jr. and MGP 2017 winner JOWST. A soul song with a bit of ‘-iz speak’ mixed in to modernize it, the number transitioned from a makeshift office to a simulated nightclub scene, an impressive bit of stagecraft for a song that perhaps lacked a broad appeal otherwise.

After a voting period, the results were announced. In the end, Alessandra Mele, Umami Tsunami, and Ulrikke Brandstorp each advanced to the MGP final on February 4.

Estonia SF 1 - Wayne Ralph

Estonia - Eesti Laul 2023 - Semi-final 1

Eesti Laul 2023 kicked off with Semi-final 1 on 12th January. It involved 10 songs battling it out for the first 5 positions in the Final to be held on 11th February. There are two rounds of voting with both jury and public being combined to pick the first four artists and then a further vote by the public to select an additional artist.

The hosts of the show were the returning Tõnis Niinemets and Grete Kuld.

The first 10 contenders were (click on the titles to watch the performances:

Song 1 - Janek “House of Glass”

Some theatrical staging but an almost robotic performance by Janek. “House of Glass” was co-written by Mørland who represented Norway in 2015. A little bland.

Song 2 - Ellip “Pretty Girl”

At least Ellip brought some stage presence, unfortunately she didn’t bring much of a song. Douze points for attitude.

Song 3 - Kaw “Valik”

The audience seemed to enjoy Kaw’s song which was entirely in Estonian. Not the greatest vocally but not bad energy.

Song 4 - Merlyn “Unicorn Vibes"

Pretty familiar eastern European pop number but needed way more unicorn.

Song 5 - Mia “Üks samm korraga”

Mia previously took part in Eesti Laul in 2012 with “Bon Voyage” which came 8th in its Semi-final. Tonight she looked gorgeous and delivered a strong performance with an up-tempo ballad in Estonian. Definitely got everything that she could out of it.

Song 6 - Neon Letters and Maiko “Tokimeki"

A song in Japanese and English on Eesti Laul, go figure. The staging involved them being stuck in a light box and it felt like their performance wasn’t quite able to break free of it. Very flat.

Song 7 - Ollie “Venom”

Ollie gives us a competent rock song. All the usual camera cuts that you’d expect with this type of song. An attractive man that can somewhat sing…..it’s catnip to Estonians.

Song 8 - Andreas “Why Do You Love Me”

Andreas is a “sad boy” with floppy hair. Interesting hand-ography from the back up dancer. His song is not ground-breaking by any stretch.

Song 9 - Bedwetters “Monsters”

A monster on a hoverboard. Let the memes commence. Another “rock” song, but not up to Ollie’s standard. A very low-rent Lordi that isn’t filling anyone’s void.

Song 10 - Anett and Fredi “You Need to Move On”

Anett and Fred followed the monsters with a lounge number. Very laid back and classic staging.

So, getting through to the Final were:

First 4

Andreas - “Why Do You Love Me”

Ollie - “Venom”

Anett and Fredi - “You Need to Move On"

Bedwetters - “Monsters"

Next 1

Janek - “House of Glass”

True to form for Eesti Laul the men reigned supreme once again. Poor Mia. Let’s hope a few solo females win through in Semi-final 2.

Albania - Luc Spencer-Gardner

Festivali I Këngës 61, Albania’s favourite live music show and artist selection for Eurovision, held their final on December 22nd, 2022.  I sat down to watch the telecast retrospectively, for what was almost a 4 hour event.  Here is a brief recap:

A eternity of waiting to get to the arena where a drawn out opening number was followed by a fast-talking host in a dress that shouldn’t look good on anyone, but she managed to pull it off.

Please Note: The single host, Arbana Osmani, was extremely good throughout the show!

I could comment on each song, however that would make this article extremely long, and almost unreadable… So I will put through my lowlights and highlights:

Vocally Challenged:

·        Gent Hoxha (sweetheart with the pearl necklace looked good, but that’s it)

·        Vanessa Sono (love a good stand and deliver ballad… key word here being ”good”)

·        Fabian Basha (sat woefully under the music the entire time to tell if he was singing)

·        Urban Band (rocker with curls was far too quiet to matter)

Rest assured, it was… okay:

·        Sergio Hajdini (Mr. Man-bun and his funk/soul effort)

·        Gjergj Kaçinari (pseudo rocker missing and oomph to stand out)

·        Rovena Dilo (terrifying to watch, but not altogether terrible to hear)

·        Lynx (imagine following the hometown favourites, and final song of the evening)

Standouts:

·        Elsa Lila (Severe look, significant talent.  She was lost (in the best way) in this “Suus” inspired track)

·        Erma Mici (okay to start, elevates, screeches and all in tune with some power)

·        Franc Koruni (Vlad the Impaler and his Yin-Yang pendant served up an excellent murder ballad in true Nick Cave Style adding some big band moments)

·        Evi Reçi (I simply just really liked this)

·        Fifi (Strong presence and vocal, engaging but lacking song-wise)

·        Enxhi Nasufi (serves us up some fantastic slapper-pop, with a good sound, outfit and attitude to boot!)

·        Albina & Familja Kelmendi (a war cry with Fuelln vibes, totally engaging)

Outliers:

·        Dull and Unremarkable:

o   Petrit Çarkaxhiu

o   Rezarta Smaja

o   Melodajn Mancaku

·        Camp Fun:

o   Manjola Nallbani

·        Good, but…:

o   2 Farm (just made 3 minutes seem far too long)

o   Alban Kondi & Lore (She was excellent – he was not)

And after all was said and done, the Jury placed these acts as their top 3:

  • 3. 2 Farm

  • 2. Albina & Familja Kelemendi

  • 1. Elsa Lila

However, when it came to who would represent Albania at Eurovision, the power was in the hands of the televoting public, which saw the Jury’s second place take the mantle as the nation’s representative in Liverpool!

There were too many interludes, one with a geriatric poet which was far too much to bear, but the female non-drag-queen had the audience, the band, the host and me laughing (even if I couldn’t understand the joke)!

WAYYYYY too long, but somewhat entertaining nonetheless.

Ukraine - William Fedor

With the success of Kalush Orchestra in Turin at previous Eurovision Song Contest, Ukraine has the opportunity of providing a great successor or just something to fill in their spot as they already have a place in the finals. Once again, Ukraine maintains its 100% qualification record.

Unfortunately, with the war still continuing in Ukraine, the normal process in producing a show like Vidbir had changed due to safety reasons. Normally, Vidbir is held in February, but this year the decision was made to move the final to an earlier date, thus the final was held on the 17th of December. A selection process was held resulting in 10 artists competing in the final.  Due to the constant bombing by the Russian aggressors, resulting in power shortages in Kyiv and around Ukraine, instead of being hosted in the studio, the contest was held in the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station.

Prior to the finale, all the songs were released on YouTube.  There was a lot of reactions towards the songs with Jerry Heil, “When God Shut The Door” being the favourite amongst the fandom.  As to be expected during a war, a lot of songs revolved around the identity of Ukrainians and their struggle with freedom from the oppressor. How they chose to portray the song came down to their performances, including props and back up performers.

I do love that the theme music for the show is traditional Hutsul music played by a Soplika (wooden flute). The show commences with a rendition of “Chervona Kalyna” sung by the artists participating in the contest. (made popular at the beginning of the conflict)

The show was hosted by our previous Junior Eurovision and Eurovision host & commentator and regular nice guy, Timur Miroshnychenko as well as Eurovision alumini Kateryna Pavlenko and Zlata Ognevich.  Our judges for the night were Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala, Taras Topolya from Antyila and Julia Sanina from Hardkiss.

(1)    Starting off with Moisei “I’m not alone” featuring a violin.  A rock ballad, with a heart in the colours of Ukraine made up of crates in the background and large search lights. He is also a veteran of the current conflict.

(2)    With neon lightning, it’s time for OY Sound System "Oy, tuzhu" (Ой, тужу).  With the use of a DJ, it’s an electronic ballad.  Quite different!

(3)    It’s time for Demchuk “Alive”.  It’s a pity he doesn’t use the guitar that he wears, but it’s a nice ballad.

Time to reflect on what has happened over the past few years and the rehearsals for the contestants and now it’s time to have a break. Yes, I know it’s been hard work so far.

(4)    Jerry Heil is up after the break with “God Shut the Door”.  With outfits that look like they’re peasant girls and amazing vocals, we just had to borrow the headphone look from Slovenia.  The element of the Ukrainian language brings the song to another level and using elements of a traditional Ukrainian melody help tie it all up in a big bow.

(5)    Fiinka is next with their most colourful "Dovbush" (Довбуш).  I absolutely love the Hutsul graphics in the background.  I would have to say that their biggest let down would be the vocals, but it really is an entertaining song and I love the effort to create the performance.

(6)    Krutь brings the magic of the Ukraine’s national instrument, the Bandura with “Kolyskova" (Колискова).  An emotional and powerful ballad that would do really well in Eurovision.

(7)    Tember Blanche with "Ya vdoma" (Я вдома) looks to be Ukraine’s answer to our Belarus 2017 entry.

(8)    Angelina “Stronger” a simple ballad, someone had to wear a white dress.  It is Eurovision after all.

(9)    2Tone “Kvita”, I’ve seen flowers grow a lot prettier than this.  It’s not bad but could be a lot better.

(10)                      Our final song for the contest is Tvorchi “Heart of Steel” presents a very somber and moving performance making exceptional use of his props to send his message to all about what is really happening with war.

The show then features acts from Pianoboy, 2022 Junior Eurovision contest Zlata, Jamala and Verka Serduchka.

Three hours later, it’s finally time to reveal the votes, with jury votes announced followed by the public votes. The winner of the jury vote was Krutь “Kolyskova”.  Tvorchi “Heart of Steel” wins the public vote by 1 point and will represent Ukraine at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest.

I must say that you would not think that this show was organised in a metro railway station.  With all the effects, lighting and staging as well as accommodating an audience, I was extremely impressed with how the show came together. As they say, the show must go on and nothing can stop the determination of Ukrainians!

Hello Liverpool! Slava Ukraina!
